Re: Iggy's Debating Society
Hard to predict an exact date, but it is easier to predict what it will be fought over. The most likely candidate is water, followed by energy, in light of shortages induced by climate change. Just better hope that everyone's sensible enough not to whip out the nukes.

only america would do that...... dumbasses they can't even build cars
I m suprsied china and middle east is involved, i throught it would be russia ahh remind me of certin games operation flashpoint for a start
and ultimatly, yes as energy start to run out we start fighting over it however some sciencit can make petrol "out of thin air" don't ask how they did it, but I supect that it will still not help our globel warming probley means apperently it still has the same stuff as petrol o.O

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
It was the Mayan calendar that ended in December 2012. Don't pay any attention to such rubbish, and don't invoke science as support for an argument unless talking about something which concerns science, Gunner.
As for petrol out of thin air, it uses solar power to heat up the air, causing the CO2 and water in it to condense into hydrocarbons. These can then be burned to release the solar energy used to make them in the first place, plus the CO2 and water used in the first place. It's basically a way of getting solar power to fuel cars.

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
yes I heard that also, but again when did that calender start? how do they know our age is the last and how do they now what is a "age" anyway ? thier is nothing suggesting that..
belive it or not, most off this info is over youtube but again, that is youtube you type it in wiki...you get nothing, type it in BBC ....you get nothing, the info is not there, when I was younger they said 2050, yeah right....we are humans we have the ablity to adapt to chance if not phyiscly we will find something that can help us adapt to that

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
I can come up with a new calender now that will end in 2 months, still won't mean its the end of the world then.
Talked with a doctor about H1N1 - media hype, nothing more. Can be cured easily like any known type of flu.

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
nah you got it right and wrong, the mayan calander talks about an apocalyps around that time (and havent checked the calculations but its said that the mayan calander is more exact then our western calander) but not as the end of the world, more a possible starting of a new, depends how it goes
Its been some time i read about it but think it is/was based on the cycles of the moon/earth/sun, dont know the exact years but think at dec 2012 the sun has completed a full cycle and comes at his/her beginpoint again, and before that period ends because of the allignment of sun/planets etc and solarflares earth gets more "chaotic" with dec 2012 as its peak
ill try to find that paper i read if ppl are interested.

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
we could debate on the topic of spamming... what is spamming and how do you discern it from regularly posting? 62 posts in two weeks, is that too much?
imo, quality counts not quantity. many low-quality posts = spam, many high quality posts = no spam.

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
This was a question that I got for my physics homework that I thought I'd share with you all, because I think it's awesome .
If the mass of one teaspoon of water could be converted entirely into energy in the form of heat, what volume of water, initially at room temperature, could it bring to boil?
So, any guesses? I'll let you know the answer soon.

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
a buttload of water for such a small amount of energy. i remember this question back in school. it was something like 100 of my towns swimming pools or like a kilometre of the river near my house. sound a couple of hundred thousand litres is my guess.

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
About 1 billion litres, which is 300,000,000,000,000 teaspoons of water. You get this result from E=mc^2 - interesting to think how much energy is contained in such a small volume.

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
If your consciousness could be 'cut and pasted' into a machine that would be immortal, would you do it if it meant that you as you are now would die? Could it ever be possible to transfer a consciousness to a machine without interrupting it i.e. killing you?
I had this conversation with Dj today in xfire - it's an interesting thought. I think that maybe I would if I was old and had accomplished everything I wanted to anyway - it would be sort of like having a child that would live on forever to remember you. The second question though would give an even better result if the answer is yes - real immortality.
Discuss .

Your body may not age, but your mind will. It will become rotten, unable to see the truth in life, and thus no longer have a reason to exist

Re: Iggy's Debating Society
Philosophy at its finest
Define "consciousness" and you'll have your answer
Similar questions, from studies on AI:
Assume there are mechanical/electrical equivalents of brain cells. What if you replace a single brain cell of a living human with such a mechanical thing, will the person still be the same, still have the same consciousness? What if you then replace a second, third brain cell? And what if you gradually replace all the brain cells with their mechanical equivalents, will it still be the same person with the same brain, same personality and consciousness? Or if it becomes a machine, at which point during this process would that have happened, after just one brain cell gets replaced or all of them?
What if you take the brain of a human, attach mechanical/electrical sensors where the eyes/ears/etc would be connected, so the brain is surrounded with everything it would have had inside a human. It will be "fed" and kept alive, just like in a human. Is it still a human brain?
