Iggy's Debating Society Empty Iggy's Debating Society

Post  Guest Thu Mar 12, 2009 7:11 am

This topic is for the civilised discussion of current affairs, whether in gaming or in the wider world.

Rules of the room: only civilised arguments and counter arguments are to be made. At no point shall personal insults be utilised, and at no point should one person's ideas be forced upon another. Posts that do not follow these rules will be deleted, and those who made them dealt with accordingly.

I shall leave it up to someone to post the first question, happy arguing! Very Happy And try to keep the politics to a minimum Smile.

its not,

that is aslong as you are a sheep or got a written testimony from the sheep.

But if the urges are there...... better see a shrink

and no wearing woolen clothes does not make you a sheep

Not if you're a sheep, but otherwise, it could be seen as immoral. As Saviour said, you would need consent from the sheep for it not to be classed as rape, and that might be hard to come by. Smile

P.S. I was hoping for a slightly more high-brow first question, but you've gotta start somewhere I guess. Razz

Next question on the agenda:

What is the answer to this question?

Life has no meaning. If you accidentally drop your milk on the way to home it has no meaning either.

Is maths inherent in the universe, or is maths merely a human tool created to understand the universe?

I personally stand by the first option. I fail to see how something as hugely successful and infinite as maths could be a human invention. The other day my teacher showed me the most mind-bending equation I have ever come across, Euler's identity:

Iggy's Debating Society EulerId

It links e, the irrational number of calculus (i.e. gradients), pi, the irrational number of trigonometry (i.e. sine, cosine, tangent), i, the imaginary unit (i.e. the square root of -1), addition, the most basic mathematical operation, 1, the multiplicative identity for all numbers (i.e. multiplied by 1, any number remains the same) and 0, which remains constant when multiplied by any number. How could a human invention have come up with something so profound?

nice one Iggy!

and you're right about your answer, we humans definitely didn't invent math, it's even more likely that math invented us.
think about this: if aliens will show up on earth tomorrow, there will be one common language that us and them speak: the language of math. 0+1 always equals 1, no matter if on earth or on any other planet; and these two numbers, zero and one, are in fact the only numbers there are, all other numbers are their "children" (2 = 1+1; 3 = 2+1 = 1+1+1 and so on).

now what about the following question: is 0 (zero) a number? a number is defined by being something with a fixed, definite value; the zero has no value though.

wel true and not, who says the 0 and 1 is a 0 and 1 in their civilation, the concept might be the same , but the symbols could be different.
however a rose is still a rose even when not called a rose Razz

and 0 not being a number, wel not having a fixed is also a fixed. i mean if someone doesnt have a style its stil a style.
but then again the year 0 is also a misconcept, since you dont say "zero'ost" year but first year. lol i think 0 is a start Razz

and 0 not having a value then you could say its nothing, but they say if you have everything(1) you have nothing(0) so 0=1 and 1=0 oO?

I do A2 further maths Deathspeed Smile.

And 0 is a number, that represents the concept of nothing.

this is possible with complex numbers, those numbers that can also calculate the square root of (-1), which is undefined in the field of real numbers.

i was curious and entered this equation into R (don't have maple installed anymore). here's what came out:
Iggy's Debating Society Equation

as you can see, it is true; "-1+0i" is a complex number which equals the real number "-1".
don't mind the imaginary 1.2e-16i part, thats the floating-point arithmetic precision error of the computer.

and yea i know, i could have used 1i right away instead of defining i Very Happy

about aliens and numbers, of course the symbols are different but math is all about concepts, the symbols aren't that important. the arecibo message for example uses the most simple number system, the binary system, which any intelligent being capable of doing math would understand, read here.
