a few years ago when i had no router and had to use a software firewall, i used "kerio personal firewall", it was free, and among the free firewalls it was one of those that was suited for computer beginners and professionals. for beginners the "learning" mode was recommended and from what i heard from my computer beginner friends its pretty good. i used the advanced mode where i could set all the fw rules by myself.
nowadays they renamed kerio to something else (ask google), its still free and has at least all the functionality that it used to have a few years ago, no clue if it works with vista though (ask google).

Re: Help
I'd recommend the same option as Hunter did.
Why? Since Hunter is my lil' bro and I'm a Network and Systems Engineer by profession (besides being photographer and designer) he posted the solution I oppose and migrate into home systems and networks.
Why?
A software firewall is only good for the feeling of being safe.
In fact, you're not 100% percent safe with a software firewall.
As a company contacted us about some security issues I went on the scene to investigate the case.
It was a restaurant, 4 employees and 5 pc's. Every pc was updated with the latest McAfee licenses but the internet was slow as a snail.
After talking to the ISP I found out that there was a hacker eating up the bandwidth as the company was used as spam proxy.
After a struggle to get it out of the system we implemented a hardware firewall.
Now, when a worm, trojan, adware or other spyware gets on the modem of the company it injected itself into windows on boot sequence on port 1181.
This way it bypassed both the firewall and the virus scanner by disabling both of them on startup.
What I'm trying to tell is that the only good firewall is a configured hardware firewall.
This won't eat up system memory and it will keep you systems safe.
For home use however I would recommend turning on the Windows Firewall, this controls ports and programs.
Besides the Windows Firewall it's a must to install a proper virus scanner.
I'd recommend Avast. It's free, fast, good working, has proven itself, easy to use, doesn't eat up memory and... It scans your disk before Windows is started up! This way you'll be able to detect viruses that other virusscanners won't be able to detect as they are loaded before windows is loaded.
Conclusion?
1. Install Avast antivirus (also scan network traffic)
2. Reboot and bootscan the system
3. Turn on the Windows Firewall
4. Be safe and have fun!
Cheers!

Re: Help
true, true.... even with a hardware firewall you're not 100% safe, if it has some exploitable errors in its software then it can still be hacked.. so you're basically never 100% safe[BoL]Nemesis wrote:

the only advantage of software firewalls is the ability to setup different rules for different programs, helps a lot with applications that like to phone home, or with those that display ads (e.g. xfire) - you just forbid that app to access the IPs/ports where it gets the ad images.
@Nemesis - what kind of hardware firewalls do you install for your customers?

Re: Help
There is a 100% effective firewall.. Air. No virus can pass through air.
But avast is very good.. I've had it since 2005 i think.

Re: Help
I havent come across an AV proggy yet which is fast at doing full HDD scans. It always takes hours for them to go through my partitions containing approximately 600-800 GB of data in total
The problem is with the performance of current HDD's most likely...cant wait SSD's to become more common.
