Good guide there and i've heard a lot of great things about Kaspersky.
I personally use AVG Free Edition, you get quite a good program there for absolutely nothing and although it's maybe not pro like Kaspersky, it updates every day.
http://free.grisoft.com/
Spybot Search and Destroy is my spyware preventor, it can have some problems but generally serves me well. Also free.
http://www.spybot.com
ZoneAlarm is my firewall, being free again, serves my needs perfectly. It's generally secure and you can go onto a game mode too (although that's got its advantages and disadvantages).

Some free alternatives there incase your on a tight budget.

Don't talk so bad about Norton...
ok it is really bad, but only for us who know at least a little about computers.. that program is awesome for lamers who know nothing about security, antivirus and firewalls. it makes the computer work 10x slower but it does its job, it protects them from nearly everything, even from themselves.
and, if you go to the kaspersky site, _of course_ it makes their antivirus look like it is the best one, that's called marketing
if you want to compare go to some 3rd party site, there you'll get an unbiased opinion.

Re: does and dont for pc
Just to let you know about norton, i was installing some extras yesturday from my motherboard's driver disk and saw a anti-virus scanner. I wasn't really thinking so installed it and ta-da, norton appears. Took me a restart before it installed correctly, another after installing updates which i couldn't decline to and after uninstalling, it had to restart again. But the main difference was RAM.
Lot's of people say it's a RAM hogger, and i've finally seen why. I've got 2GB of RAM and it took up 10% of it. So if you have 1GB of RAM and most who are running norton do (or sometimes less), it is 20% of your ram, maybe more.
Considering windows takes up about 10-20% depending on which os your running, thats a lot of room it takes. So that might leave you with just under half of your ram used, fine, but what about your other programs? My RAM went up 10-15% more than normal, and wasn't with all my programs running either. I was lucky to have 70% of ram left with 2gb.
DONT DO IT PEOPLE!

Re: does and dont for pc
Based on my experience, the best option is using some common sense while browsing the internet and downloading files, and not use any AV proggy at all
Viruses arent as common as a lot of people seem to think...
And a third-party firewall isnt usually necessary either if you're behind NAT and your router and windows firewall are both on.

Re: does and dont for pc
i agree on kaspersky yet i chose dr.web and trust me or not he is same good as kaspersky(and before you even start both are made by them)
as for kaspersky beeing bad... well since version 6 it is going downhill if you ask me
norton: omg how come everyone who has it allways runs around asking for help
avg: i'd say it is good but i rate it below norton for simple reason nothing can kill norton(pc terms speaking)
now what i sugest for any xp user with ram issues is freeramXP small neat and free utility cleans your ram allmost instantlyuse it before you start playing games for vista SuperRam(cost somethign though) but trial version is good
as for no AV option
well it suits me i visit only sites i have tested over the years and some news sites not every site google gives me
basicly if you are not "looking" for crack ---- serials keygens anything illegal anymore outside the known boundaries you are free not to use it
more coming:...
Ccleaner is basicly sugested by anyone... may i sugest somethign more drastic? delete your masterboot and reinstall windows only to windows directory cleans all old registry issues... also don't index file searches never, clean up temporary files atleast once a weak manualy(to not delete something you need)

Re: does and dont for pc
as for security:
dont have a software firewall since i'm behind a router with NAT and a hardware firewall;
firefox with noScript + adBlock plugins help against evil scripts on pron&similar sites;
AVG Free edition since it's the best free virus scanner nowadays;
but most important is what Vlad said, turn on your brain while surfing the net
performance:
the times where registry cleaning made your pc faster are over since a long time despite what some software vendors say;
the best way to improve performance is to disable unneeded services and autostarts, how to disable services - read windows manual, to see all your autostarts and disable the unneeded ones use the tool "autoruns" from sysinternals (google it);
another good thing to do, especially if you're low on ram and windows uses the swap file all the time, is to create a separate partition for the swap file, it only needs 1-2gb and saves your windows a lot of swapping headache
about some other tips:
file indexing - no one _ever_ noticed the file search being faster if file indexing is enabled (which it is by default) so latvian is right there, you may safely disable it
temporary files: there is a folder in your user folder which the windows explorer will not show even if you tell it to show hidden files, you may navigate into it by hand though, just type the address in the address bar; a lot of temp files go there and you should clean this folder if you care about free hard disk space (this does not improve performance at all).
navigate to c:\docs & settings\<username>\local settings\temp, mark all files&folders there and delete them, some files might be in use and wont be deleteable, dont worry about the rest since its not needed by any programs anymore. i have seen computers with over 1gb of space wasted through this folder.
if you still need more disk space you can delete all the windows patch backups, you shouldn't uninstall them anyways so you can safely delete all the \windows\$NtUninstallxyz folders
