I was only providing you an attractive upgrade path, that's all. I know your economical situation and a quad core for less than 100 € would give you some serious bang for buck Smile

Preliminary rumours indicate that HD5870X2 will be running on significantly lower GPU and memory clocks than its single-GPU counterpart. 850 MHz GPU clock for HD5870, 725 MHz for HD5870X2 and respectively 1200 and 1000 MHz memory clocks.

If that turns out to be right it sealed my decision not to go ATI/AMD and rather wait for GT300. Dual 5870 is a lot more attractive option performance wise but also is more expensive, and the enthusiast part, Hemlock (also known as 5870 X2) is more like two 5850's on the same card. Now that Nvidia is in deep problems, ATI/AMD is starting to rip people off =)

well... the 5850 and the 5870 are practically the same if you look here:

http://images.bit-tech.net/news_images/2009/09/ati-radeon-hd-5850-launch-date-confirmed/10.jpg

theres not that much of a differance and the 5850 is a good £100 cheaper. The 5850 isnt that bad of a card, if GT300 turns out to be meh and the 5870 doesnt drop in price i might consider one.

Not exactly....there are more differences than just the clock speeds. Please check your facts before pusting crap like this.

I posted a link to a chart explaining the differances betweeen the two cards. It shows theres a differance in Clock speeds, memory bandwidth, power draw and size. Thats more than just clock speed.

Lets have a look here at a retailers website.
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Graphics-ATI/ATIHD5800Series/Sapphire/21162-00-50R.html
Now the 5870.
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAP-5870

It says the exact same thing as the chart. So yeah. I checked my facts. Feel free to look around and prove me wrong.

I put a pair of Club3D 5870's in order for a total price of 698 euros. Expecting a significant performance increase over my current 280 kit, and hopefully stable drivers.

Now lets see who can challenge me in here in hardware performance. According to some reviews I've read on several notable hardware sites, 5870 outperforms the fastest HD4000-series cards by a fair margin (in some cases being twice as fast), and outperforms GTX285 by 50-60%, and even the 295 by a hair in some cases.

Gotta hope that Nvidia's GT300/Fermi is up to challenge ATI's newcomers. One thing is almost sure however: GT300-based cards will cost an arm and leg.
